In most leagues RB's go first because there is usually a greater difference between the talent pool in the running back position, or a lot of teams use a back by committee approach now a days - While this approach is great for fans and teams to utilize their best resources it doesn't calculate into much for fantasy football owners.

So when do I draft a RB in fantasy football?
That all depends on your leagues scoring system - Backs should be picked first in a scoring league that offers a full 6 points for a running TD and a mere 3 points for a passing/receiving Td. If you are new to a league and have a relatively high draft pick then pick the position the trend is picking - especially if the people drafting before you are returning members.

You really should do your home work and figure out how much each player scored the year before in your league that would give you a better idea of where they stand on this list. Overall though RB's are usually in short supply - Make sure you get a few starters, You don't ever want to get stuck with a team that has the back by committee approach.

Rookie backs - If your league uses a keeper system - risking a high pick on a rookie can pay off for many years to come. These rookie Running backs can be hit or miss if you are just drafting them for this year.
